Tennessee Executive Director

Tennessee is our founding state; it is the place our work was born and it will continue to serve as our organization’s headquarters. We seek to hire a full-time Tennessee Executive Director (ED) to lead the effort to grow the D2D network to new districts, to deliver support to these districts and to offer professional learning opportunities for teachers and leaders. We seek an instructional leader who is passionate about improving teaching and learning, a dynamic and results oriented team manager, an inspiring communicator and coalition builder and a learner to chart the course of D2D’s work in Tennessee.


District and Service Management:

  • Manage the team to deliver high-quality instructional support services to every district, resulting in short- and long-term improvements in instructional practice and student learning and in high levels of satisfaction
  • Propose and, in partnership with D2D’s national team, pilot services to help districts strengthen instruction that may become part of the central D2D support menu
  • Continuously learn and hone a personal understanding of how to help systems develop systemic solutions to improve instruction and student outcomes

Team and Project Leadership:

  • Manage team members and team communication to keep staff focused on goals
  • Manage (and in the first few years help build) the processes to support delivery of service
  • Manage financial planning and accounting of up to $4M budget
  • Recruit and hire the local team of full time staff
  • Recruit and lead the process to select and train hundreds of content specialists to work with D2D in a part time capacity
  • Embrace and embody D2D’s culture and core values

District Recruitment and Coalition Building:

  • Grow the D2D network in Tennessee by expanding to new districts
  • Build new relationships and leverage existing relationships to rally educators around a vision of instructional excellence
  • Work with other instructionally minded partners in the state to ensure collective impact

Candidate Qualifications and Traits:

  • Commitment to excellent daily instruction for all students
  • 7-10 years of experience leading instructional improvement efforts for a school, district or non-profit with track record of successfully improving student learning
  • Uncommon level of personal responsibility and goal orientation
  • Demonstrated achievement growing networks and building strong relationships in public education
  • Convincing public speaking and facilitation that engages and inspires; ability to articulate inspiring educational vision that leads others to follow
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity and resolve conflict directly
  • Ability to travel within Tennessee weekly and to occasional national conferences
  • Enthusiasm for exciting yet demanding work in this start-up leadership position
